In July 2020 during the early part of the Covid Pandemic while at home and scanning through the NextDoor App, I came across a post from someone saying they had captured a dove that was on the dock by their place of employment. The dove was not able to fly and the individual did not want the bird to get eaten or further injured. However, that individual could not keep the bird at his residence and needed someone to pick up the bird and bring to a rescue if possible. I volunteered and picked up the bird, which turned out to be a pure white pigeon. A lot of others had also assisted by sharing rescue resources with me. The pigeon had sustained an injury to its leg and was limping so definitely required rehabilitation. Later that evening I transported the pigeon to an amazing lady who assisted with Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue (GLPR) group. Upon dropping off the pigeon I was offered a tour so I could be introduced to pigeons. I learned so much that evening and was even provided contact info if I was ever interested in fostering or adopting a pigeon. Over the following two weeks I spent hours doing research and then made the decision to fill out an application to foster with possible adoption. The next 3 weeks felt like it was dragging because of the excitement.
At the end of August 2020, I picked up my very first pigeon couple and that was how it all began. Fast forward to end of December 2020 and several pidgies in my care, I then decided to bring home some doves.
Due to the doves being in an indoor non-heated aviary prior to me bringing them home, one of the four doves became ill and passed the day after Christmas. Malaeka, Eloa, and Alysium are all thriving and remain with me permanently. Fast forward to October 2022 with a lot more pidgies and doves, I then took in my first Silkie Chicken.
I was at a Feed & Seed store that I frequented to purchase food and supplies for the pidgies and doves and as I walked past a tiny cage that this precious bird was in, she caught my attention and captured my heart. I could not leave without bringing her home and providing her with everything I felt she truly deserved. I named her Stasha and she is known as a Showgirl AKA Naked Neck Silkie Chicken.
